Description
103 ULTRAMARINE RUSSIAN FACETED FUR TRADE GLASS BEADS!Feast your eyes! You may never again see this many choice ultramarine Russian faceted beads on a single strand. The elderly gentleman who sold me these beads in the early 1990s in Boise, Idaho told me they were part of a cache found at Fort Okanogan, an American Pacific Fur Company trading post established by David Stuart in 1811 in what is now north central Washington state. In 1813, the fort was sold to the Canadian Northwest Company, which merged with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821. The fur trade fell off, the region was ceded to the United States in 1849, and the fort was abandoned in 1860. They are mostly in the 3/8" range, some smaller and some a bit larger. They are in superb condition, with no wear and only a few of the minor dings you might expect, given the bumps and grinds of overland travel in the early 1800s.
