This 17 c icon is painted in tempera on the wooden surface . The Northern Russia school of painting. "The Sanctuary of the Source" stands near the ancient Selimbria Gates of Constantinopole at a spot now known as Balikli. Tradition has it that in a vision, the Mother of God declared that its water was miraculous, and this the sick flocked to it In te icon born of this tradition, the faithful, gathered round the basin, laud the Mother of God as the inexhaustible source of life and health. The Virgin emerges half length from a fountain shaped like a chalice. Drinking and bathing in the fountain's waters are the emperors, the patriarchs, the poor and the sick. A Thessalian is brought back to life when water is poured over his head. The theme of the Virgin's fountain of life appeared in Russia in 1654 under Greek influence, making this icon to be one of the first icons ever made in Russia on this subject!!!
