Visit our store! Offered here is wonderful intricately RARE Antique chip  carved wood beer stein mug from Norway as told to us by the former owner. This was purchased in an antique shop in England/Wales during the 1950's. There are vertical twig bands above the top and bottom of the center carvings. It stands on three feet that have a fluted carving pattern. The handle and lid are also carved beautifully. The wood lid is attached to the handle with a wood peg. The only markings on this stein is what appears to be a symbol carved on the underside. This is in excellent condition. There are some minor surface wear consistent with age. This stein was made with 5 panels of wood which have shrunk alittle from age showing minimal light when viewed from inside. We have been informed that there is a twig band missing on the bottom group of 3.  According to a Ebay'r collector who is is affliated with "The College of Beer Steins", he informed us of the following info: "[1] it is definately Scandinavian / Baltic   [2] the Bavarian steins, while the lid attachment is similar  usually have a pointed tip on the lid and a finial,  with NO chip carving.  [3] Estonia was more famous for the twigs going around the bodies.and while it has some aspects of those made in Estonia my visit to my reference books coundn't find anything  with the "chip carving" that well done, nor the  construction of the  lid / handle attachment .   I was going to guess Finland / Baltic Russia, as all  three of the  Norwegian "chip carved" steins I have are all "twig-less" - however  several I  have in my Photo files which, were ID'ed as Scandinavian or Swedish  -  ---  SO yours could very well be from Norway-- why not take the owners word for it ?    PS:   a very, very similar one sold for $460  (plus shipping) on ebay in 12-05 and with all the surronding twigs intact,  Steve  ."
