Highly Collectible and museum quality article. I have seen many similar Ainu robes in museum and this one is one of the most beautiful and the best-in-condition piece. The best Ainu textiles typically display strong, graphic designs created with applique and embroidery. The patterns represented the wearer's inner spirit and guardian spirit. Some of the materials used were made by the Ainu, and some such as cottons, silk and velvets were acquired by trade with the Japanese or from the continent. Many of the best surviving examples were traded from the Ainu to Japanese ship captains, who brought them home as gifts or exotic souvenirs. These pieces were stored in kura or family warehouses, safe from the damaging wear that naturally befell garments worn in a hunting and gathering society.
